With the January transfer window open, here is one player West Ham should consider from each of the 24 Championship clubs.

Aston Villa

Jack Grealish is a talented attacking midfielder with plenty of potential but Aston Villa would probably demand an astronomical fee for their 23-year-old local boy. Striker Keinan Davis is another talented youngster, while Chelsea’s on-loan star Tammy Abraham is one to keep your tabs on.

Birmingham City

West Ham recently played Birmingham in the FA Cup and striker Che Adams, 22, is the one to watch in this team.

The 22-year-old French striker has scored 16 goals this season. Goalkeeper Daniel Bentley was born in Basildon and could provide back-up to Lukasz Fabianski if Adrian leaves, while left-back Rico Henry and centre-backs Chris Mepham and Ezri Konsa are all promising young players.

21-year-old defender Dael Fry would be an exciting addition for the long-term future. Other youngsters West Ham should consider include winger Marcus Tavernier, 19, and 16-year-old defender Nathan Wood.

Realistically, the South London club are not going to be doing business with bitter rivals West Ham, nor would the Irons be keen on any current Millwall players. Young defender James Brown is probably Millwall’s best under-21 player.

Norwich City

Other Norwich starlets worth tracking include midfielder Todd Cantwell, left-back Jamal Lewis and utility man Ben Godfrey.

Nottingham Forest

Versatile Nottingham Forest youngster Matty Cash is far from the finished product. But having operated in central midfield, on the wing and as a right-back for the Reds, the 21-year-old has shown he has the potential to progress to the Premier League one day.

Preston North End

Josh Earl is a highly-rated young defender at Preston with a big future ahead of him in the game. Comfortable at left-back or centre-half, the 20-year-old stands at a towering 6ft 5in, making him a presence in the air.

Queens Park Rangers

Ben Wiles, 19, has been impressing in central midfield this season after making his first-team breakthrough.

Sheffield United

Sheffield United are another team who might be reluctant to do business with West Ham. But if West Ham were to look for a Blades player to poach, 24-year-old centre-back Jack O’Connell would add much-needed depth to the centre-back department.

Sheffield Wednesday

Joe Allen is another option for the Hammers to pursue.

Swansea City

Central defender Joe Rodon has been a rock at the back this season. The 21-year-old is dominant in the air and strong in the tackle. 23-year-old Wales international Connor Roberts is also thriving for Swansea this season.

West Bromwich Albion

One player West Ham United should target from each Championship clubGiven West Ham’s injury problems at right-back and centre-back, experienced and versatile defender Craig Dawson could be a decent addition at the right price. Wigan Athletic

Nick Powell has the potential to be a Premier League player if he finds his consistency. Four goals and four assists in 18 games suggests the 24-year-old still has work to do but West Ham could fancy a gamble.
