Mesut Ozil’s future remains in doubt as the German midfielder has yet to re-commit to Arsenal.

Along with Alexis Sanchez, who is in the same boat, Ozil is looking for a pay rise to over £200,000 a week from the £140,000 that he is earning at the moment.

Meeting Mesut Ozil's wage demands the only option for ArsenalLike Sanchez, his contract does not expire until 2018 but clubs are already circling for his signature. Should Arsenal fork out the money to re-sign him, or let him go to another club? One cannot deny the talent Ozil possesses, able to pick out passes to teammates that create goal scoring opportunities.

He is one of the deadliest players at the London club and when he is on form, one of the best play makers in the world. Wenger simply cannot get rid of someone with that type of talent. Ozil is Arsenal’s creative heart and players like him do not come around often, so it will be hard to find a replacement who can replicate the same abilities on a weekly basis. i

In 21 games so far this season, the 28-year-old has scored nine goals and added five assists, but it was last season where he excelled with six goals and a massive 19 assists in the Premier League. If Arsenal ultimately let him go, it is yet another world class player leaving the club, similarly to the likes of Robin van Persie, Cesc Fabregas and Samir Nasri.

Despite the ability while attacking though, there are questions regarding his defensive skills. Ozil looks lazy at times when not on the ball and does not chase or run back as much to help out his defence when they are under pressure.

For Ozil’s demands to be met, Arsenal will have to pay at least an extra £60,000 a week to keep him. In spite of what he can produce, is paying that much worth it for someone who is outstanding going forward, but terrible while defending? This is the concern that the Gunners will be thinking of while they negotiate a new contract.

Another worry will be whether he is totally committed to Arsenal going forward, or there to just make as much money as possible on a new contract. The discussion will be ongoing for a while, but if Arsenal want to fight for a Premier League title, they need to re-sign Ozil before other clubs take his services.

Surely the Arsenal powers that be would have learned by now that selling Ozil could come back to haunt them, by either not having a worthy replacement or allowing him to move to a rival club.

His defensive shortcomings are more than made up for with his attacking ability. Arsenal have to finally loosen the purse strings and sign Ozil to a new contract now, or else it will be another world class player that will be heading out the Emirates door.
