After faltering to an opening day defeat to Swansea for the first time in nearly 40 years.

It was left for Manchester United gaffer – Louis van Gaal to search where he all got it wrong.

Louis van Gaal’s 3-5-2 formation questionableThat in turn is not far fetched. With Van Gaal saying ‘United need to play to their strength’ he should also consider covering his weaknesses and the two goals United conceded certainly exposed that.

Playing the 3-5-2 formation is no mean feat, especially with three defenders at the back. You need the right balance of players across the pitch to make winning possible and Van Gaal should know better. Ultimately, systems, formations will become hollow if the right players or personnel are not up to par or staved of confidence.

Manchester United: Louis van Gaal’s 3-5-2 formation

Most of United’s players looked uncomfortable throughout the match, but in reality it was a case of putting too many square pegs in round holes. Jesse Lingard had little effect on the game before the injury, Adnan Januzaj is too of an attacking player to be worrying about his defensive duties. Juan Mata was asked to play deeper with the introduction of Fellaini, and Ashley Young played at left back after Van Gaal reshuffled.

It is a case of signing the right players to fit into the formation. With United being linked to countless of players, the timebomb of transfer deadline is ticking on Louis van Gaal and Ed Woodward, and waiting to explode. Unless further addition to the squad is made the expectations made by the United hierarchy may prove to be a hill too high for Louis van Gaal to climb.
