Gianni Infantino claims..

The successful use of VAR technology at the Confederations Cup could see it implemented for football’s grandest tournament in 2018.

Gianni Infantino: Nothing to stop FIFA using VAR at 2018 World CupNumerous decisions were reviewed by assistant officials during the recent competition in Russia, perhaps most notably Gonzalo Jara’s foul on Timo Werner in the final between Chile and Germany on Monday morning.

Ensuring a Confederations Cup which was fairer to all teams involved due to the technology, FIFA president Infantino says it could be inevitable that it is utilised at next year’s World Cup.

“Nothing is standing in the way of using VAR [at the World Cup], as far as I’m concerned,” he told reporters. “So far it has been successful. We are learning, we are improving, we are continuing the tests. Without VAR, we would have had a different tournament, and a tournament which would have been a little less fair.”

Infantino did concede, however, that the criticism VAR has faced in the wake of the final – where Chile’s Jara was allowed to stay on the pitch after clearly elbowing Die Mannschaft forward Werner, showed that the system has not been perfected yet.

“We need to work still on some of the details, on the communication and the speed of the decisions being taken,” he added.
