Who should Manchester United sign in the summer?

Manchester United have had a mixed season so far; the recent 3-0 humbling at Goodison Park and inability to breakdown a resolute Chelsea side shows that there are many chinks in the armoury.

Five signings to make Manchester United formidable once moreUnited losses have been followed by Liverpool and chasing pack dropping points; which has resulted in United being in driver’s seat for next season UEFA Champions League.

With Champions League qualification almost confirmed, next season, United will have many more games and will have to compete with Europe’s best. The existing squad is clearly not cut out for a good run in Champions League or winning the Premier League. Some valuable additions to the squad can propel it to league success and good run in other competitions.

Here are some of the players who could possibly make Louis van Gaal’s side ‘world beaters’!

Memphis Depay

Dubbed as the ‘Dutch Ronaldo’, Depay has become a hot prospect with sterling performances at PSV. He has got pace, great dribble and can score free kicks. He is just 21 and has a bright future ahead. He has already worked with Louis van Gaal and would probably be a good fit in this United team.

He can add creativity, pace and oomph factor the united attack. His close relationship with Louis van Gaal would play a factor when he eventually decides to leave PSV. He could cost United a fee in the region of £25 million to £30 million.

Mats Hummels

At 26, Mats Hummels is one of best centre-backs in the world. Every top club wants to have Hummels as part of their team. Such is the interest in the German maverick defender. He is a defensive leader, good ball distributor and his positioning is world class. He will add steel and calmness to this United defence which has at times been shambolic.

Hummels is the sort of defensive leader that United are craving for since the departure of Vidic and Ferdinand. With Dortmund having a poor season and in all likelihood not making the Champions League, Hummels might be on the move in the summer. He could be available at the fee in the region of £35-40 million.

Ilkay Gundogan

Gundogan has been a vital cog in the Dortmund wheel over the last few seasons since he signed from Nurnberg. Recent injuries has affected his progress and in turn affected Dortmund’s performances this season. He was part of Dortmund title winning team and the team that reached Champions League final. He has got great vision, can take set pieces and is a great passer.

Such is the quality of this German midfielder of Turkish origin. United have looked flat and disorganised a lot of times this season. Also Carrick isn’t getting younger by the day. So, Gundogan can add dynamism and spark to this United midfield. He can play as a defensive midfielder, box to box or even on the flanks.

His multi-functionality fits perfectly in Louis van Gaal philosophy of playing ‘Total Football’. He will add quality to this United midfield and could be available in the summer for a fee in the region of £20 million.

Edinson Cavani

The Uruguayan forward is one of the most wanted goal poacher in Europe. He is a world class centre forward who has ability to score all kinds of goals. He is a complete striker and can play on the flanks if required. He has often played second fiddle at PSG under the shadow of Zlatan Ibrahimovic and for his country where the focus is on the mercurial Luis Suarez.

With United strikers Robin van Persie and Radamel Falcao having poor seasons (Falcao loan may not be turned into a permanent deal) Cavani fits in the bill for leading United’s forward line with Rooney playing just off him in a number 10 role. He is strong, physical and quick; perfectly satisfying all the three traits required to be a successful Premier League footballer.

At 27, he is at his prime or maybe reaching this prime. This would be a perfect time for him to move to Premier League and United will be a perfect club which is in dire need of a world class striker. He could cost United a whopping £50 million.

Nathaniel Clyne

The young English right back has progressed leaps and bounds over the last year. He is clearly the best English right back right now and second-best behind Branislav Ivanovic in the Premier League. He can make marauding forward runs as well as defend well. With new homegrown rules, he has become one of the one demand right back in the Premier League.

He has played a huge part in Southampton success this season. United have been playing Antonio Valencia at right back which is clearly a makeshift option. Valencia has made some silly errors which have resulted in goals. Also his crossing hasn’t been great. With Rafael not being offered a new contract, it is in all likeliness that United will look for a right back this summer.

Clyne would be the perfect signing for Louis van Gaal’s side. Teams have targeted right side of the United defence this season which has looked shaky. So signing Clyne is more of a necessity than a luxury. He could be available for a fee in the region of £25 million.
