There were many fantastic players throughout what was a magnificent tournament.

Some relatively unknown to the masses whom took the French stage to impress, while others were household names searching for glory with their respective nations.

Antoine Griezmann: Euro 2016 player of the tournamentIndeed, one of these players was Frenchman Antoine Griezmann, staring for the host country and despite their 1-0 loss in the final, the Atletico Madrid hit man won the golden boot award for his total of six goals. Michel Platini is the only other countryman to score more in one tournament, with a total of nine.

The 25-year-old was nothing short of electric for Les Bleus, but had a slow start to the tournament and improved with every fixture played. Griezmann is a well-known hard worker on the pitch and he was no different when playing for his country as he also highlighted his aerial skills. He was at times the saviour for coach Didier Deschamps’ side, such as his two goals scored in the semi-final against Germany.

However, he nearly missed such chances to shine after being substituted in the opener against Romania – and was dropped from the squad against Albania. Scoring against the Albanians after coming on late in the match, not only set the ball rolling for his tournament, but made him a fan favourite.

His continual successful performances during the tournament highlighted his prowess as a prominent striker in world football. Teammate Bacary Sagna told the media prior to the final that he considers the 25-year-old to be in the same category as Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi. “Antoine, to me, is right up there,” he said during a press conference on Saturday.

While there is much disappointment within the French camp, the players including Griezmann, gave it their all and should not have any regrets from their fantastic campaign.
